Who is Great Stars iJongosi

Great Stars 'iJongosi' is an extraordinary music and dance ensemble that specialises in Imbube / Acapella music and some Southern African traditional dances such as Zulu dance, gumboot dance and Isitshikitsha, among others. The group is based in Bulawayo, the cultural capital of Zimbabwe.

The group started as a church group in the Silobela / Nkayi District, and transformed into Great Stars iJongosi in December 2011 — named by P. Donga, who was inspired by Black Umfolosi as well as Indosakusa and other Imbube groups.

The name is an appreciation of the amazing light provided by the stars at night. Our music brings life to souls as it entertains, educates and conscientises — it stands like light that overcomes darkness, hence 'Great Stars'. The nickname 'iJongosi' describes a young, energetic bull; it came from our audiences, who watched and marvelled at our vibrant dance energy on stage. The dance steps and energy in our performances are fresh, unbeatable and like never seen before.

Brief history

The group was formed first and foremost as a means of self-employment during a period of high unemployment. Our music covers a wide range of topics — love, social issues, environmental issues, human rights and everyday life — accompanied by spectacular dances we choreograph ourselves, some drawn from traditional dances passed down through generations. The group is self-taught, with all choreography done jointly under the coordination of lead singer and artistic director Philani Donga.

We set out to become custodians of Imbube music so it is preserved for future generations, and to take it to the rest of the world. Our mission:
